Ork Boyz Squad 1 - Front

Orks for Chirstmas

Well it only took 4 weeks but I have finished my first squad of Ork Boyz! One could argue that I spent a bit too much time on simple boyz, but since I’m doing this for the enjoyment of it, and trying something new, even Boyz get a shiny paint job 🙂 Even though these are the Orks from the [amazonify]B000057SRB::text::::Assault on Black Reach[/amazonify] set, they are still detailed and entertaining to paint. From their unique sneers, dangling teef, and cobbled together weapons (there are bolts holding the choppas together!) it was fun picking out the details as I went along. A decided to paint the squad as Death Skulls for two reasons: I like the color blue, and I wanted to try a hand at war paint. So each Ork has sone form of blue face paint, painted weapons, or shoulder tatooes. I was also going for a heavily weathered look so I added rust, teal patina a lots of scratches. Even the mud was brought up the legs, knees and rear ends of …

Cypher the Fallen Angel - Front

Completed Cypher and Command Squad

As promised I completed Cypher and posting the pictures, off to a good start on my new goals! Cypher was a great character in 3rd Edition Chaos that was mysteriously phased out in the following Codex which really is a shame. Though after reading DFG’s rumor roundup it seems like he may be making a comeback! And here is the full squad together. I am quite aware that I may never be able to play with the squad (except for Apoc of course) but after sitting in my closet for years I figured that Cypher had earned himself a squad. Well the pictures capture that I haven’t really “completed” the squad as most evident by the lack of a banner. I also haven’t finished clear coating and glossing the models (see the back of the medic for a finished piece there), but it is done enough to post and put on the shelf until the day I decide to add custom banners to models. Next up will be some Ork Boyz!

Fallen Angel Command Completed

The Fallen, Command Squad Complete (Part 3)

So I finally completed the last two members of the Fallen Angel command squad to accompany Cypher. Well when I say complete, the models are complete, I now need to create a banner or the pole bearer… I’ll be spending some time on FTW trying to get ideas for that.   First up, the standard bearer:     And the final member: the power weapon bearing dude.     And here is the squad all together waiting their mighty, if mysterious leader. As I paint Cypher up I plan to take more step-by-step pictures to post how I did each step. stay tuned!

Leman Russ 3 - 14th Grand Company

Traitor Leman Russ

So with the long, holiday weekend I spent a bit of time finishing up the two Traitor Russ Battle Tanks. These are of course for the Traitor Guard aspect of the 14th Grand Company. Here is the finished Traitor Leman Russ #2. The main body is the faded orange/red streaks but added a couple of large Chaos stars that the Forge World models tend to have. I think it helps break up the large spaces well and add new interest. At first I was going to paint the lenses green to match my Iron Warriors but through it clashed a bit too much and decided on the blue instead. The cool blue offsets all the warm oranges and is more fitting with the cool silver. I also thought the cargo boxes looked a bit funny being empty so I painted up some bitz to add some details. This one has an extra gas can (for those torch wielding fanatics), an extra lasgun and a rusty shovel. You can also see the close up of the …

Obliterator Scupted - Finished - Front

Second Sculpted Obliterator (3) – Finished

Just finished the second custom sculpted Obliterator. As you can see from the steps below and the previous posts, it really only uses four bits: a heavy flamer, mutant arm, spare head, and the terminator lord head crest for the sorcerer build. Everything else was custom sculpted with green and grey stuff. As compared to my first sculpted obliterator, this guy has a bunch more bulk built up around the wire frame which I did by adding blobs of green stuff until I liked the size. I used grey stuff for the robes and finer details as it holds up a bit better. The vent tubes were added by using plastic tubing to mimic Typhus and the dreadnoughts. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It has been a good step in learning how to sculpt, hopefully I will eventually be able to sculpt all the parts. Until then I have boxes full of bitzs to use. I also put together a stage-by-stage picture, I think it is pretty inspiration for me, especially as …

Dark Elf Reaper Bolt Thrower

Ahh… the dreaded Reaper Bolt Thrower. Not much to be said about it other than this is another paint job from the beginning of the army but other than the metal areas I think it looks pretty good and looks great for a table-top piece. I had created a larger base for the unit but in never got passed to the primed black stage, perhaps when I finish it I will repost with the unit on the base.

Iron Warriors Rhino #1 - back

Iron Warriors Rhino #3 Finished

Decided to finish each of the Rhinos one at a time, so here is the first. I credit Wienas for the idea o f hazard strips on the front panel, so thanks for that! I think they turned out ok. I made the mistake of deciding to paint the interior and although it turned out ok, the amount of work that went into something that may never been seen any way… not so sure.

Dark Elf Chariot

Dark Elf Chariot

. Next up in my Dark Elf Army postings is the neat, but ineffective Cold One Chariot. This was also one of the first I painted when getting back into the hobby so forgive the not-so-great painting 🙂 As much as the temptation is to go back and repaint the model, it is good enough to sit on the table and I would rather focus on the units I have yet to paint. In some ways I am glad they didn’t redo the chariot with the new cold ones. As cool as the new dinos look for the knights, I like the look of the bulkier beasts for the chariot. Though it they redid the whole model in plastic I would probably buy another, though this model hasn’t found it into many of my army lists in 7th edition, and may even less in 8th. Any one have success using chariots in 8th edition? On the plus side they can no longer be auto-killed with S7+ hits but being single model units they would have …

Iron Warrior Terminator Squad 4

Iron Warriors Terminator Squad 4 Complete

So as I continue to balance between completing old units and finishing new ones (see the Mentor Legion guys I just finished) I have put the finishing touches on my 4th Iron Warriors Terminator squad (WIP shots here). There wasn’t much left to finish on this squad. I finished the base using my new style and painted on the XIV to mark them as part of the 14th Grand Company. Standard bolter and power ax with the obligatory Space Marine helmet. Heavy flamer and power fist with the cool helmet from the Sorcerer Lord kit. Chainfist time and a trophy rack with my Brother-in-law’s Hive Fleet Behemoth head on display. Combi-flamer and another power ax. This is by far the coolest chainfist, fitting I also give him the combi-meltagun.One more squad off the painting table and marked green in the status page! Next up is the rhinos…

Dark Elf Master

Dark Elf Masters

May I now introduce you to my Dark Elf army. When I first got back into the hobby a few years back the Dark Elves were the army I started back up with since they had just been re-released. I choose to post the pictures of my Masters/Dreadlords first because it shows the improvement in my painting most distinctly. The new dreadlord model was one of the last I painted before moving back over to 40k where as the old dreadlord model was one of the first I painted when getting back into the army. After taking the pictures I realized the base was never finished, he is now moved to the painting desk to remedy this. The weapon arm was swapped with the sword from the Cold One Knights set as I didn’t like the pose of the model with the hook weapon, I’m saving that for something else. I would often army this character with the Heart Seeker sword which is why I attempted to paint the sword with the red tone, not the …

Mentor Legion Squad Finished

Mentor Legion Tactical Squad Finished – Part 6

Back to my Mentor Legion Tactical Squad that I’m working on as a test pilot program for some loyalists. I was finally able to finish the last few details of the squad, including the base and matte varnish. I’m still playing around with some various backgrounds and picked up a pack of card stock of a couple shades of tan and gray. For this shot I used the dark gray card as the tans turned out too yellow and light. The only thing I don’t like about using the card stock is the lines, oh well. On to the individual shots: The Captain pointing away with his yellow power sword and Mk. VII Armor.   The sensor guy with his grenade. I like how the numeral 3 came out on his shoulder pad.   Standard bolter marine but with an added scope.   Meltagun, note the extra targeting lenses, I always have issues hitting with meltaguns, so I figured it could only help right?   And the missile launcher. I added a bit of script to the tube …
