Another awesome week of hobby posts is upon us. So come check out my selection of hobby posts you should not miss in Good Reads 56. Heros of the Empire These beautiful conversions and the alternative paint scheme is what caught my eye with Bruno’s Dark Angel successors. Particularly the bone-white for his Captain, converted from the Space Hulk set. And the Mutant Wilhelm has made some incredible conversions, but this may now be one of my favorites. Using a real snail shell, Crypt Horror, and Plague Drone, the Abalone Mutant was born. The paint job is also brilliant with the mix of blue, white, and purple. Drawing Fantasy Maps I’m always impressed by the tutorials at Dagger and Brush, not only because of their quality, but also they aren’t your typical topics. Like this one on how to draw fantasy maps! From DnD adventures to story based campaigns, drawing a custom map can really tell the story. Men in Black Jeff has done some incredible conversions, but for this squad of Deathwatch Primaris, he …

Good Reads 55 – Bog Daemons, Tzeentch Titan, Sculpting, and More

Catching back up myself, I present to you Good Reads 55 with some of my favorite hobby blog articles from the week. With some incredible conversions, tutorials, and inspirational pieces, these are well worth your time to read. More Demon Trees I don’t think I will get tired of seeing the incredible conversions by NafNaf. He has been adding to his Bog Sylvaneth, with some corrupted Dryads and Bog Wraith Bitch. The seamless transformation between Nurgle demon and Treeman is incredible. Tzeentch Imperial Knight Another incredible hobbyist, D Power’s latest project involved converting a Tzeentch themed Chaos Knight. There are so many cool little details, from the chess themed base (everyone is a pawn of Tzeentch) to the tentacle fist, to the portal to hell on the tilt shield. Making Bandanas Not only has the Hobbyistgirl joined the ranks of hobby bloggers, but she started out with this great tutorial on sculpting bandanas for her Ork Freebootas. Cutting into your feed of #New40k reviews and battle reports, Good Reads is here to highlight some of the awesome work by fellow hobbyists. These are some of the ones that caught my eye and well worth spending some extra time on this week. The First Born With all this #New40k going on, it is fun to see people breaking out their old armies again. Like these classic Vostroyans by The GunGrave. Unfortunately, he sold them off, but they are a lovely army to look at. Sail Away Photos While not a full step-by-step tutorial, Nil’s post is a great view into how he painted this lovely bust of Sail Away. It is fun to see how other artists go about painting. You can see the finished gallery here as well. Light Up Marines Rory has a knack for finding excellent hobbyists from the forums and getting them to showcase on his blog. Despite the focus on all the exciting changes for 8th edition, there was still a bunch of awesome hobby working happening. So dive in and check this week’s Good Reads and be inspired by your fellow hobbyists. For those new here, Good Reads is where I showcase some of my favorite hobby posts from the week. Some are fantastic tutorials, others are inspirational showcases, but all are worth checking out and giving the blogger a follow. Bogged Down Durthu NafNaf is on a roll with his Sylvaneth. This week brings his reimagining of Durthu as a bog demon. Not only is there some excellent conversion skill going on here, but his use of texture paint is impressive. Your Brain on Art Outside of the usual hobby sphere, I did find this interesting article that discusses neural scientists studying the brain activity of artists. While there isn’t anything substantive in the article, it is interesting to see scientists trying to understand what makes painters like us tick. Welcome to Good Reads 51 where I share some awesome hobby posts from the last two weeks. With some painting tutorials, amazing miniatures, and awesome hobbyists, there is lots to check out. Alternative Magnus the Red The plastic Magnus the Red is already an incredible miniature, so it takes some skill and creativity to convert it. Rebecca took up that challenge with this creepy alternative for their INQ28 campaign. Painting a Blue Orc Popping out of his shell to give us another incredible painting tutorial, Darren Latham wrote how he painted this blue Orruk Megaboss face. While not everyone will want their orcs to be slightly blue, the details around the ears, eyes, and mouth are useful for any orc/ork/orruk player. It is incredible to see what hobbyists come up with or the new projects they are painting. Good Reads is my attempt to showcase some of the favorite ones I found. I hope they inspire you with your projects and teach you a new trick or two. DIY Terrian is Still Cool Sometimes you need more line of sight blocking scenery pieces, especially with all those big guns out there. To solve this, Jack built up a couple of pieces from leftover cans and a few spare bits. Then with his usual impressive painting skills, he turned them into great looking pieces. Coils of the Hydra I liked how Gungrave’s Alpha Legion Dreadnought turned out. Between the charging pose and the fantastic metallicÂ blue, it makes for a very nice looking Contemptor. The details pop with his paint job as well, showing off Forge World’s excellent sculpting. Painting Black A few weeks back I wrote an article on painting black using some quick and dirty methods. Squaduary Finished While my Squaduary pledge was a failure, plenty of other hobbyistsÂ fished their squads in this final showcase. Back with some awesome hobby posts from the last two weeks, I’ve some great articles for you to check out from 30k, 40k, AoS, and Blood Bowl! I even have two tutorials in there for you to learn some new painting tips. Ultramarine Battle Tanks I love tanks, and Lord Halfpenny’s mobile detachment for his 30k Ultramarines caught my eye. Sculpting a Witch Hunters Hat With the new Agents of the Imperium book out, it seems fitting that Nazroth put together a tutorial on creating Witch Hunter hats. I think his focus is on Mordheim miniatures, but the tips work well for all sorts of armies. Blood Effect: Theory and Tutorial Will from Miniatures of Tomorrow has been cranking out some amazing commission pieces, and along the way, he created some helpful tutorials including this one on painting blood effects – specifically blood splatter.
