Caught up in the #New40k Hype Train

Yes, I got swept into the massive hype of #New40k (can you blame me?). Between building the minis from the Dark Imperium box and a whole pile of Sector Imperialis buildings have kept me busy. I think I have built more miniatures in the last few weeks than the previous six months. While it has affected my posting schedule here, and my writing goals for the next book, it has been a ton of fun getting caught up in the thrill of 8th Edition. Gaming Table I think I bought a set of Secret Weapon’s TableScapes two  years ago and they have been sitting in the box, languishing ever since. But with excitement of the new edition of 40k being easier than ever to get into, I decided to break them back out as well as the box of GW building kits. While it is only a 4×4 set, it will be plenty big enough to get some games in at the house and I can expand upon it later. Eight of the tiles are roadways, …

Painting: Ork Warboss With the new Ironjawz out, I have plans to turn the megaboss into a warboss for my 40k Orks. Having done a tutorial on how to paint my last warboss, it can give any aspiring warboss a start painting your own boss. …

Good Reads 49

It is incredible to see what hobbyists come up with or the new projects they are painting. Good Reads is my attempt to showcase some of the favorite ones I found. I hope they inspire you with your projects and teach you a new trick or two. DIY Terrian is Still Cool Sometimes you need more line of sight blocking scenery pieces, especially with all those big guns out there. To solve this, Jack built up a couple of pieces from leftover cans and a few spare bits. Then with his usual impressive painting skills, he turned them into great looking pieces. Coils of the Hydra I liked how Gungrave’s Alpha Legion Dreadnought turned out. Between the charging pose and the fantastic metallic blue, it makes for a very nice looking Contemptor. The details pop with his paint job as well, showing off Forge World’s excellent sculpting. Make Your Own Castle The dream of many fantasy gamers is to do a castle siege, reliving all those cool scenes from Lord of the Rings. John built himself a …

Good Reads 44

Welcome back to another week with Good Reads 44, a collection of hobby articles from around the web that you don’t want to miss. With tutorials, inspiration, and some amazing models, these are well worth checking out. Acastus Knight So the Acastus Knight is an incredible kit from Forge World and Jake of Redscorps did a fantastic job of painting his. Between the well done blue and white scheme and just enough weathering, it’s an excellent centerpiece. Making Robes from Tin While not for the faint of heart (and thin-skinned), D Powers put together a tutorial on how to use thin sheets of tin to create custom robes. The end effect is incredible as it creates a much thinner robe than using green stuff. Age of Munda The freedom that INQ28 allows is an interesting concept that I have started playing with, but the rules are scattered and a bit complicated for basic games. So  I love what BigBossRedSkullz did by combining the game mechanics of Age of Sigmar with Necromunda. Allows for great narrative while minimizing …

A Vengeful Gun At some point I need to get more terrain built and painted as I figure it will make easier to start playing again. Here Siph shows off a nicely done Vengeance Weapon platform with a neat trick to switch it from battle cannon to the Punisher Cannon. DIY Candles for Scenery In the gothic world of 40k or craziness of AoS, candles add a nice touch. Nazroth put together a nice tutorial on how he adds tiny candles to his bases – with and without flames. Other than trying to drill a teeny …

Good Reads 40

Happy Thanksgiving my fellow Americans and to the rest of the world, happy Good Reads Day! Whether you are bored at your family’s house, or trying to make it to Friday, I hope the selection of hobby articles will help 🙂 As I’ve taken a few weeks off to recover from Dreadtober, this week’s Good Reads is a bit longer. So sit back, click through the links, and enjoy a day of happy hobby reading! Painting Space Marines The team at Tale of Painters is constantly putting out good looking models, and Garfy has been featured a few times in White Dwarf. Over the years he has put together a ton of tutorials as well, and now all his Space Marine painting guides are gathered in one place. It’s cool to see the colors and styles all together. Mechanical Vermin Lord Going in the other extreme, Jake is showing off his WIP Skavan Vermin Lord built from a Knight kit! I’m not sure why he wants a twelve inch tall rat, but I am sure …

Good Reads 37

Good Reads 37

Good Reads is all about sharing some awesome content from fellow hobby bloggers. Every day you guys are building, painting, and writing some amazing things. I try to gather some of my favorites here to share with all of my readers. With Dreadtober in full swing, I haven’t been able to fully keep up with all the blogs, so if I haven’t commented lately, sorry! And since I missed last week’s post, this one will be a bit longer than normal. Keeper of Secrets Not one to wait another dozen years for the model, WestRider converted his own Slaanesh Demon Prince from a Vermin Lord. It’s an incredible twist on the Dark Princelings. Death Rattle Army One of the nice benefits of the new ruleset in Age of Sigmar is being able to create small armies that play well. No longer needing blocks of 100 skeletons, Heaven’s Teeth built up this Death Rattle army rather quickly and it looks great. Learning About Infinity Corrm recently had a guest writer, Chris Rhode, who shared his experience on …

Hobby Blog Collection Good Reads #36

Good Reads 36

Good Reads is all about sharing some awesome content from fellow hobby bloggers. Every day you guys are building, painting, and writing some amazing things. I try to gather some of my favorites here to share with all of my readers. Necron Triarch Necrons have always been one of those armies that I have wanted to do (killer robots are irresistible after all!). I also love blue, so when I saw Grenn’s Necron Triarch Praetorian, I had to share him here. It’s a fantastic metallic blue and green that adds interest to the metal warrior. Red Hunters I hadn’t heard of the Red Hunters until Gothmog’s post on them, but I really like how he used the Death Watch set to build them. It’s a great use of all those inquisitor bits for this specialty chapter and yet not painting more black and silver. Concrete Walls Line of sight blocking terrain is important for any gaming system and concrete walls are the simplest ways to do this. Scar Hand Painting wrote up a tutorial on how he …

Watch This: Painting Tablescapes from Secret Weapon Miniatures

Watch This: Painting Tablescapes from Secret Weapon Miniature

Another new video is ready for Watch This series, this week is with Designer Warfare and painting Tablescape Tiles from Secret Weapon Miniatures. He paints up a few sections of the Urban Road (Clean and Damaged) with his airbrush for our enjoyment. I’ve been looking at picking up some of these Tablescape Tiles for my own gaming table and found this video super helpful. I hope you enjoy his fairly quick video on painting the streets and check out my cheat sheet notes below for later reference. Quick Reference for Painting Tablescapes Due to the manufacturing, some tiles may have variations in the plastic color Doesn’t affect the physical nature and is easily covered in primer (large plastic injection molding is hard and can leave harmless ‘sunbursts’ in plastic) Prime each tile with Grey Primer Use Model Air Pale Blue Grey, focusing on the sidewalk areas Keep some variation in the spray to add interest in each tile Avoid the cracks and recesses Paint craters with Army Painter Oak Brown Start at center of each and …

Good Reads 27 With Domitars, Bases, Renegade Knights and More

Welcome to another week of Good Reads. If you are looking for a bit of inspiration or new tutorials to watch, Good Reads is a collection from recent postings around the web. Check out your fellow hobbyists and leave them a few comments as well! Domitars Rob put together a great pair of a Domitars that are not only painted extremely well, but he did a fantastic job of posing them to create a great sense of motion and story. The gory trooper at his feet also provides a nice contrast to his cool, robotic look. Painting Bases Wilhel is back this week with a great step-by-step on how he paints his bases. They are a great mix of jungle, marble tile, and 40k morbid gothic. And he makes it look so simple too! If you want to see the monster he put on this beautiful base, check out his Tyranid mutant as well. Meeting of Scouts There are two types of scratch builders in my mind: the economist who is trying to hack together an expensive …
