Good Reads 41

Bringing together some awesome hobby blogs that I have found the last few weeks, Good Reads 41 has some good ones for you. So dive in, check out what your fellow hobby bloggers are up to, and leave them a comment. How To: Chipped Paint Tutorial by Scott on The Brush WizardAdding chipped paint to a model is one of the basic ways of adding weathering. It can be as hard as you make it to be, but Scott shows a few steps to take to make them really pop. With only a few extra colors, you can give your models some extra character. Birth of a Chaos Knight Titan Anyone who finishes a Knight Titan deserves an award. And to do one with such incredible degree of details, Thor’s Chaos Knight Titan deserves an extra reward. Named Ironfate, Thor has put an amazing amount of work into painting him. Converted Gal Vorbak Forge World’s models are epic, and the Gal Vorbak of the Word Bearers are no exception. The problem Eric ran into is …

Conversion Points - an Outdated System by Rob

Conversion Points in Painting Scores: Why They Should Pass Into History

Good morning, class.  In today’s “History of Miniature Wargaming” lesson we’re going to talk about a concept called, “Conversion Points” and how they factored into painting scores, why this approach was introduced, and how some forward thinking event organizers led the charge to make the conversion points a thing of the past. Much like the fossil fuels used in the 20th and 21st centuries, conversion points were added into painting scores for a number of really great reasons but as miniature model technology improved the need for them to be present was eventually phased out. To extend the metaphor, Zero Point technology made oil based industry obsolete.  And like ZPT and the Oil Wars, conversion points led to massive conflicts before their use was deemed obsolete.  For the next eight hours (Solar Standard) we’ll be discussing this topic and the impact it had on the history of competitive play in relation to miniature wargaming… I jest, of course. There probably won’t be a war. But this blog post really is about how conversion points in …

Good Reads 37

Good Reads is all about sharing some awesome content from fellow hobby bloggers. Every day you guys are building, painting, and writing some amazing things. I try to gather some of my favorites here to share with all of my readers. With Dreadtober in full swing, I haven’t been able to fully keep up with all the blogs, so if I haven’t commented lately, sorry! And since I missed last week’s post, this one will be a bit longer than normal. Keeper of Secrets Not one to wait another dozen years for the model, WestRider converted his own Slaanesh Demon Prince from a Vermin Lord. It’s an incredible twist on the Dark Princelings. Death Rattle Army One of the nice benefits of the new ruleset in Age of Sigmar is being able to create small armies that play well. No longer needing blocks of 100 skeletons, Heaven’s Teeth built up this Death Rattle army rather quickly and it looks great. Learning About Infinity Corrm recently had a guest writer, Chris Rhode, who shared his experience on …

INQ28 Techno-Barbarian Ma’tu

So diving back into the world of 40k today, I have finished up my first Inquisitor 28 model. This INQ28 Techno-Barbarian was born out of a soup of inspirations (and need to step away from Mansions of Madness a bit!). The biggest prompt to try this guy was Adam of The Golden D6 got me hooked up to do a paint review of WarColors line of paints. They were super generous and sent me a pile of goodies but specifically, seven different turquoise paints to highlight one of their unique selling points (group colors into shades to highlights). I won’t dive into the paints here as I’m saving it for the review. So armed with seven types of turquoise and three shades of brass, my primary color selection was chosen for me. The problem? I had nothing painted turquoise! But I did have the free Stormcast that came with the White Dwarf a few months back and a pile of bits. With his plate armor and stoic pose, I figured a heavy would suit him best. So …

Good Reads 2016 Week 16

A few months back I had debated on stopping the Good Reads series as it is surprisingly time intensive to gather the articles and write this up. But as I was planning the future articles of Broken Paintbrush, I couldn’t imagine really stopping. There are just so many amazing bloggers out there sharing their hobby journey. So onwards the Good Reads go! Dark Eldar Incubi Conversions The clever and amazing NafNaf has put together yet another crazy cool unit for his Dark Eldar, a carnival themed army of creepy clowns and circus monsters. The new unit is a fantastic conversion of Incubi with top hats. In fact, NafNaf is making such creating stuff, that Thor from Creative Twilight also featured his Incubi in today’s Blogger Showcase. Prepping for Competition While I have yet to travel for any painting competition, I can appreciate the massive amount of work that it would take to pack everything up and keep it all organized. The guys at Massive Voodoo are no strangers to traveling with amazing models, and thankfully they put together …

Good Reads Week 35 2015

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads on the Broken Paintbrush, where I’ve gathered some great articles and inspirations from my blog feed. I hope you enjoy and check out each of the blogger’s works. First up is The Hunter by Jeff Vader over at the Convertorum. Its an amazing work of his imagination for an alien warrior for his Inq28 games. He even goes into naming the Skadii and giving story to their alien society. NafNaf over at Objective Secured keeps knocking his Dark Eldar Carnival out of the park, and this time with his completed Beast Pack. With a mix of lions, monkeys, and parrots, it makes for a great riot of color and movement. Greggles from Feed the Nerd is passionately attempting to finish his Ork hoard for Nova Open. Between using crackle paste for the display boards, to painting 16+ vehicles yellow, and more troops to go, he has been a machine at cranking them out. Alex over at Lead Ballony took the free AoS model and turned it into a clock-work automa …

Traitor Guard Veteran Squad Sarg Harker

Traitor Guard Veteran Squad

Next up in my picture re-take experience is my Traitor Guard Veteran Squad. I really wanted to make these guys stand out a bit from the standard traitors so I added a number of extra bits, conversions, and mutations to the group. The bits includes an array of parts from the Cadian and Catachan Imperial Guard kits, the ever wonderful Flagellant kit, and Chaos Marauders. I also used a good deal of Green Stuff to add mutations including a complete new arm to hold one of the Catachan blades. Some of the conversions were subtle, such as the extra tentacle on the first snipers trigger finger while others were a bit crazier, such as the eye-stalk head. Ever squad of note needs a fancy banner to guide them and encourage the troops. While not a real upgrade for veteran squads, it looks so darn cool I had to find a place for it somewhere. His sword army I actually think comes from the Zombie box, so now I’m up to 5 product lines. For the …

25mm to 32mm Conversion Ring Review

25mm to 32mm Conversion Ring Review

With Games Works change to Space Marine base sizes, I bought a set of Secret Weapon Miniatures 32mm Conversion Ring set to try out. I really like the end result, but the process was a bit of a pain so I figured it might be worth a tutorial post. As with any molded product it is first important to clean off any flash. The rings had a few sections of longer flash like the picture below, but overall were well done. The main area that needed trimming was the bottom edge of each piece so it didn’t interfere with the original base. Next up, I needed to drill out the hole a bit larger as it didn’t seem to be molded deep enough. I found a drill bit that fit within the hole and then used the xacto knife to round out the front edge. The big issue I had with the 32mm conversion rings are that they didn’t fit tightly against the base. To tighten it down a bit I sliced off a small …

Good Reads 5 – Panther, Rivers, Thunder Priest, and Fists

Welcome to Good Reads 5 where I highlight some of the Hobby Blogs from around the interwebs that caught my eye. One of the things I love about our corner of the internet is that we hobby bloggers look at each other as companions in this journey and spur each other on. It is hard to find that anywhere else, so keep up the great work hobby bloggers, #warmongers, and readers alike! Chaos Panther Beast What happens when you combine the Glotkin, Maulerfiend, and a ton of green stuff? Well TG over at Dark Future Games made a crazy wicked Chaos Panther. Over the course of five or six posts, TG documented his progress from a pile of bits and a creative idea, into a very unique and inspiring conversion. Hopefully we see it painted soon TG! Improving Premade Rivers So John Stiening over at 40k Hobby Blog showed how you can take pre-painted river sections you can pick up for $18 on Amazon, and re-paint them into much more realistic terrain pieces. With just …

Good Reads – Hobby Blogs You May Have Missed – 2015W13

With the end of another week comes Good Reads 4 with hobby blogs that I have come across the last week or so. I’ve just recently jumped into the Twitter world of #warmongers, but it has significantly expanded my eyes into the world of blogs. If you are on Twitter, hit me up at @brknpaintbrush. Green Stuff Creations Green Stuff Industries shows off where to find some cool bits for Chaos Space Marines and why he is passionate about converting/bit bashing. Many of his kits are non-GW, or at least not Chaos Space Marine specific. Check out some of his cool creations. Renegades Just like many of us, Elotsip 40k needs more Renegade troopers, so he shows us three new units bits bashed from multiple sources. Some of the bits used show how GW is missing some gaping holes in the renegade, traitor guard area and I have bookmarked a few of his sources for future projects. Painting Eyes The guys of Massive Voodoo always have great paintings and fantastic tutorials. This week Raffa gives …

Good Reads – Blogs You May Have Missed – 2015W10

I follow a lot of hobby blogs, and while there is always a great slew of content that comes through my feed reader, there are usually a few that stand out for me. I’m going to call these Good Reads because trying to do a top 10 of the week, or my favorite posts never end well. So instead I will pick a few posts that I thought had great content or inspirational work and provide a curated list for you. So for the 10th Week of 2015 here are some good reads: First up is a cute little robot painted by Dave Taylor, well little may be a wrong adjective as it stands as tall as his Thallax. And yes, I may have accidentally called it a rust bucket in the comments, those leg parts are brass – hard to see on a small phone screen. Rebel Grot by Kamui from Creative TwilightKamui from Creative Twilight has finished up a great custom built Grot Commissar if you haven’t seen his Rebel Grot army you should …
