Brush Stroke #5 Broken Paintbrush Newsletter

Brush Stroke #5

With another archive post of my weekly newsletter, Brush Stroke #5  bring you some great tutorials and showcase pieces from Broken Paintbrush and other hobby bloggers around the web. If you haven’t subscribed yet, Brush Stroke is my weekly (currently bi-weekly) email where I highlight the posts from this site so you can stay up to date. But I also add some awesome articles that I have found in the archives of other hobby bloggers. So while Good Reads highlights recent posts, Brush Stroke dives into the archives. Painting: Hounds of Tindalos For the Mansions of Madness (1st Edition), I created this tutorial for the creepy Hounds of Tindalos. It was my first attempt at a lava scheme, so I share my thoughts on how I did it. Painting: Rusty Gold Came across this fantastic article on painting rusty gold – a beaten, dirty gold look from MG which is fantastic on his marine vehicles. Building: The Original Interceptor When I got my Stormtalon, I had looked around for other people’s conversions as I didn’t like the base model. Danny’s …

A Look at Sticky Tack and its use in the hobby

Cool Tool: Sticky Tack – and it’s many uses for hobby work

Ready for a Cool Tool I think you should have on your hobby desk? Expecting something big and fancy? How about something simple like sticky tack! Yup, I want to highlight the different ways you can use it for your hobby. OK, while not the coolest thing on my desk at the moment, I have found that sticky tack (silly putty, Blu-Tack, poster putty, etc., ) is a must have. Below I listed a few tricks that I use or have seen other hobbyists use. Holding minis while painting The most common way I use sticky tack is to create a handle while I paint the miniature. This not only makes it easier to hold the model while painti but also prevents me from rubbing off layers of paint with sweaty hands. I found that corks from whiskey bottles make great handles and a big blog of sticky tack holds the miniature in place. One of the benefits (as compared to glue) is that it works on odd surfaces like the banner here. Holding Still …

Final Thoughts on the Inner Circle

Final Thoughts on the Inner Circle

Greetings readers! I am back for my final installment of the series I have been writing on GW’s Inner Circle event. I started down this road what feels like a lifetime ago, with grand schemes of what I hoped to accomplish. I didn’t win my local event, and I only scored 330 points. But I learned several lessons that I can pass along that will help you win your next painting contest. I know I’ll be using some of these! Lesson 1: Paint to the Rubric All painting contests should have a rubric to let you know what you are going to get scored on and how many points each item was worth. If they don’t, they really need to have one. Once you get your hands on the rubric, really see where you can maximize your point output. The Inner Circle event, for example, awarded extra points for units that had 10 or more models in them or more than 3 models for larger models. I had exactly zero points in this category. While …

Painting: Jenny Barnes This week I finished up painting Jenny Barnes from Mansions of Madness. I put together a tutorial for how I painted her pale skin and blue dress (including a downloadable PDF). Painting: Laval Skin When I started working on the Hounds of Tindalos, I came across James Wappel’s post on painting lava skin. It is amazing how he can put colors and layers together to create such amazing work. Building: Lorimar Kraus Scientist is an amazing converter and decided to modify the already great looking captain from the Betrayal of Calth box. This …

Object Source Lighting Tutorials

List of Helpful Object Source Lighting Tutorials

Whether it is a lamp, glowing lava, or a spotlight, adding the glow effect onto the model can look impressive. Many award-winning miniatures have multiple lights that appear to actually be glowing. I’ve gathered some articles with object source lighting tutorials so learn how to do this effect. The term object source lighting (OSL) is what painters use to describe the illusion of a light striking the model. The painted on lighting effect can be dramatic, and sometimes overdone. But it is also tricky to achieve. I have tried to do this effect on some of my miniatures with varying levels of success. But rather than try to create a tutorial on something I don’t fully get myself, I found articles by painters who have mastered the technique. Light the Fire I couldn’t find who the author was for this guest post on Chest of Colors, but not only is this a beautifully well-done miniature, but the tips offered are great. “C’mon baby, light my fire ” – OSL Tips | Chest of Colors Seven ‘commandments’ …

Learning from a paint & Sip

Learning from a Paint and Sip

Recently I went to a paint and sip with my wife and found it amazing that twelve people, mostly with no painting skills, all managed to paint a great picture. It got me thinking about how we could apply some of the techniques to our own painting and tutorials. If you haven’t done one of these events, you show up to a room of empty canvases and a cool looking painting hanging at the front of the room. Each person takes a seat with a plate will the primary colors, white, and black paint, a couple of large brushes, and a cup of water. Over the next hour or two, the whole group is walked through each step and brush stroke to complete that same beautiful painting at the front of the room. This was the second of these type of events that I have done and I reflected on the remarkableness of it. I wanted to take away how the instructor was able to get so many people to accomplish works of art. I …

Continuing Work on the Inner Circle

Inner Circle Article Two: Electric Boogaloo

Hey there hobbymaniacs! Ben from Moosehead Studios checking in again to let everyone know the ups and downs and progress that I’ve made towards my goal of having 18 fully-painted units for the North American Games Workshop Inner Circle hobby event. But first, I have got to catch my breath. The time between my initial article and now has been quite the rush. Professionally, my school has gone through standardized testing (which is great for late-night hobbying), and I’ve also started spring training for my football time (not so great for late-night hobbying). All-in-all, it’s been a positive experience so far, so let’s get some of the lower points out of the way. Hobby Lows Life, in general, has been much more hectic and crowded, as it always does at the end of the school year.  With work, my child’s activities, my family responsibilities, and maintaining a commission painting service, I sometimes don’t know which way is up, and my head feels like it is spinning. I don’t think I’m unique in that, though. Anybody …

Tutorial on How to Paint Yellow with layers, wash, and one coat paints

How to Paint Yellow – Three Techniques on Three Different Models

Yellow is one of those ‘hard’ colors. So, much like painting black, I stepped up to the challenge and created a tutorial on how to paint yellow. But not just one way, but three different methods to paint yellow. Mostly this tutorial was spawned by painting my Dwarven Blood Bowl Team with yellow padding. Since I wanted to try a couple of other techniques for painting yellow, I built a Bretonnian Knight and a Death Watch Space Marine. Both of these other kits provides great opportunity to paint other colors. Well, at least if you don’t keep to the ‘standard’ Death Watch scheme. So if you need some help or inspiration on how to paint yellow, check out the three tutorials below. [convertkit form=5009797] Using Layers to Paint Yellow on a Knight I picked up a box of Brettonian Knights years ago to practice painting different colors and freehand.  And so far, I have painted only two of them! But Sir Sunshine here has provided the canvas for my first tutorial on how to paint …

Brush Stroke 1

Exactly one year ago I started a newsletter for Broken Paintbrush called the Brush Stroke. New Post: Foldio Review This week’s post on Broken Paintbrush is a review of the Foldio 2 Light Box, a relatively large, but portable light box. Photography: Build Your Own Light Box But you don’t need to buy a light box, Marc from Old School Gaming built a huge one out of a lawnmower box. Painting: Tutorial on Painting Eyes I’ve been working on improving my skin tones lately and stumbled upon a Reaper Minis article on painting eye first. Inspiration: Warlord Titan Dave Taylor is a long time favorite painter of mine, and recently …

Preparing for the Inner Circle Hobby Challenge with Ben Dake

Preparing for the Inner Circle

Hey, guys and gals! Ben here again from Moosehead Studios. In this series of articles, I won’t be offering advice on how to paint, but instead, I will be documenting my journey of preparation for an event, specifically a hobby-centered event. When I got back into the hobby four years ago, I openly said that I only painted for myself, and would never paint for competitive purposes. File that, along with airbrushing and commission painting, under “Times I’ve Had to Eat My Words.” The Holdups The problem for me, up until this year, has been the fact that most of your big painting contests were held at competitive tournaments. Which, as much as I would love to compete in them, I have never been able to because I have an extremely limited hobby budget. I could never afford what I thought I needed for a competitive list. I played mostly with models that I have had on hand for nearly a decade and re-painted, or the few models I could acquire throughout the year as …

Good Reads 47

Good Reads 47

Need a dose of awesome hobby reading? Then get ready for my picks for Good Reads 47 and be prepared to spend a few hours enjoying some excellent content. Painting Black A few weeks back I wrote an article on painting black using some quick and dirty methods. For those looking for a more advanced discussion on the topic, check out David Powell’s post on painting shiny black. Squaduary Finished While my Squaduary pledge was a failure, plenty of other hobbyists fished their squads in this final showcase. With at least 40 participants and 205 finished models, I think Rory created a fantastic new event. I can’t wait until next year (I really will complete something I promise!) Monster March If you haven’t seen it already and enjoyed Squaduary or Dreadtober, Swordmaster is hosting Monster March! As the name implies, this event is all about completing a Monster this month. So far it looks like 19 people have started, so grab your nearest monster-on-the-sprue and join in! Titan Maniple There are times I wish that I had …
